CTA comes up a lot when we talk about Digital Marketing, but what is it? What does it mean, and why is it important?
Let’s first define CTA. What is a Call To Action and why do I need them? The technical definition of CTA is best summed up by saying:
Content that encourages a user to take a specific action – e.g. “Buy Now” or “Download”. – The Internet
Ok, that is a good place to start but if you really need to understand this term and use it to your advantage when you encounter it in the “wild” we are going to need to do a deeper dive. Digital Marketing has a lot of jargon to navigate and it can mean different things depending on where it is being used and what your goals are. For example CTA may mean different things to an SEO (Search engine Optimizer) than it does to an SMM (Social Media Manager) and something else entirely to a website developer, app developer, or a traditional marketer. For our purposes in this article page, we are going to take the 10,000-foot view and focus on the general digital media perspective. Why do we talk about CTA and use it in Digital Marketing?
A call to action (CTA) is a prompt on a website that tells the user to take some specified action. In marketing, your call to action is the part of your advertisement that tells your target audience what they should be doing once they click on your PPC ad and hit your website or landing page. The best call to action phrases are clear but specific and create urgency that drives the user to action. The CTA can have a direct link to sales or information. The CTA can suggest that the reader subscribes to a newsletter that contains product updates. Usually, a CTA will be found at the end of a blog post or webpage, but they can appear anywhere on a website, or even within a social media message.
