What is Funnel marketing? What do I need to know about Funnel marketing?

Funnel marketing comes up a lot when we talk about Digital Marketing, but what is it? What does it mean, and why is it important?

Let’s first define Funnel marketing. The technical definition of Funnel marketing is best summed up by saying:

A marketing strategy based on ‘funnelling’ prospects through multiple stages of a customer journey in order to reach the end goal of a specified conversion. – The Internet

Ok, that is a good place to start but if you really need to understand this term and use it to your advantage when you encounter it in the “wild” we are going to need to do a deeper dive. Digital Marketing has a lot of jargon to navigate and it can mean different things depending on where it is being used and what your goals are. For example Funnel marketing may mean different things to an SEO (Search engine Optimizer) than it does to an SMM (Social Media Manager) and something else entirely to a website developer, app developer, or a traditional marketer. For our purposes in this article page, we are going to take the 10,000-foot view and focus on the general digital media perspective. Ok, so back to “Funnel marketing” What is it? Why is it important and how can I use it to best serve my digital marketing or website management needs?

Why do we talk about Funnel marketing and use it in Digital Marketing?

A funnel page is a separate web page or single page website with a strong focus on one goal that encourages a specific action like downloading a file, subscribing to a newsletter, service or demo, or making a purchase. The funnel page is symbolic, the shape symbolizes customers dropping off on the way to the final stage of the funnel. A marketing funnel is a way looking at and managing a customer or audience members journey from the awareness (about your business) to the final action or purchase (or whatever your goal may be for that page). The funnel was a major funcyional part of design but recently it has lost someinterest. It is important to note that the funel is still alive in marketing. Marketers still have to attract leads, generate interest and engagement, and prompt decisions and action, but not necessarily in that order, and not using the same tactics we once focused on. Primarily, marketers have used online sales funnels to grow their businesses and generate leads in a passive format, not unlike baiting a hook and waiting for fish to bite.
